Critique

GERMAN SPITZ

KLEIN: Thank you for the very good entry for my last judging appointment, and for the sporting way you accepted my decisions. I wish I could say that after almost 30 years in the breed that it is now well established and true to type and standard: sadly, from what I saw, this is not the case. I had some very good dogs and all my top winners were well worthy of their awards. Particularly in bitches, there were some very difficult decisions to me made. Throughout I had a number of oversized dogs which, in some cases, were placed because they were sound and true to type, and far better than inferior, correctly sized dogs below them. Mouths were shocking, with a lot of level bites, a couple of undershot and one overshot. Weight in some cases is a severe problem and when one has difficulty finding the bone, the animal is bound to suffer in many ways. Movement left a lot to be desired, with even some of the better dogs disappointing on the day: toeing in at both ends, plaiting, extremely close rears and high stepping. Ear sets and eyes were better than in the past, but shape of head still needs watching. Coats on the whole were good, but it can be misguided to present an almost bald animal - remember that then, everything can be seen. One or two would have benefitted by bathing. Poor handling let down a few very nice dogs. Practice makes perfect, or at least it helps! Temperament in a couple of youngsters was suspect with nervousness showing through. Breeders in some cases have a lot to answer for. What they do now is the breed of the future, with tyhe current crop of youngsters, pastricularly bitches, a lot of study and very hard work is needed if this delightful breed is to achieve its true standard. I wish you all well.

MPD. (6,1). 1. Allison’s, Oberitz Sunshine. Nice orange with lovely head, well shaped eye, neat ears. Enough bone for age and harsh coat coming on. Moved well enough for age. 2. Hawker’s, Chilite Nite Spirit. Well coated black, a little longer than the winner. Moved nicely front and rear. Good bone for age, neat feet and well shaped head, but rather wider set ears. 3 Norkett’s Applebanks Thruppence.

PD
(4) 1 Wright’s Minigarden Emil Lovely Boy (Imp). Very well balanced white with a lovely shaped head, dark correctly shaped eye and erect small ears, also good proportion of muzzle to skull. Excellent pigmentation. Nicely boned and superb, harsh double coat. Moved steadily both ways. 2 Allison’s, Oberitz Sunshine. 3 Serman’s Tymy Tymex.

JD
(6,2) 1 McCulloch’s Flactem Whizzby at Macpaws. Cream with a wedge head, well set ears, correct mouth and dark, slightly rounded eye. Well boned and constructed and moved steadily both ways. Super double coat, correct tail set and neat, cat like feet. 2 Bradbury’s Wychlea Rhonday Vooh. Another very promising black from this kennel who did not settle totally on the move. Well put together, nice wedge head with good proportions and nice eye, tidy ears and correct mouth. Harsh coat, not quite at its best. Well ribbed and good bone. 3 Rogerson’s Flactem Try and Catch Me.

PGD
(4,2) 1 Hamer’s Dajelilne Charmander. Very well coated cream with enough bone, nicely ribbed and well proportioned. Good high tailset and neat feet. Slightly domed head but dark, roundish eye, neat well set ears. Moved with purpose coming and going. 2 Hayward’s Holbain Cool Fool. Smart and beautifully presented parti colour with a very nice shaped head, nice eye shape, ears just a shade large, mouth ok. Well boned and bodied. Movement not at its best on the day, going away was rather wide.

LD (5,2) 1 Hamer’s Dajelilne Charmander. 2 Andrews’ Porterble Sirius Black from Runfold. A well balanced black who unfortunately was unsettled on the move. Pushing the measure, but a nice outline. Well proportioned wedge head with dark eye and well set, erect ears. Just a little too much overall.

OD
(10,2) The best class of the day by a mile. 1 Stannard’s Lusan Davey Dingle at Ulmarra. This sable dog shouts German Spitz! Gorgeous wedge head with small, erect and well placed ears, dark well shaped eye and correct mouth. Muzzle and nearly flat skull of correct proportions. Level topline on almost square body, coated with a harsh textured double coat. Correct construction gave good movement front and rear. Lost out on a little animation in the challenge, but a super representative of the breed. DCC. 2 Wright’s Rikki Vom Chandrapura at Orion. (Imp). A beautifully presented black with good coat and so well balanced. Good neck well set into correctly sloping shoulders. Nice wedge head with dark eye and well shaped ears, correct mouth. Enough bone and substance. Moved steadily both ways and has matured well. Res CC. 3 Hill’s Enzo Z Jemrych Nocc at Cyfelin (Imp).

MPB
(3) 1 Holmes’ Tilly Mint. Almost square black without its jacket on the day. Fairly well balanced, very fine boned with neat ears and a small eye. Well set tail. Very immature and this showed in her movement. 2 Asher’s Stonelight Razzle Dazzle. Oversized but the best mover in the class. Good wedge head with nice eye and well set ears. Well balanced with good bone and body for her age. Undercoat just coming. 3 Holmes’ Sparkling Topaz.

PB
(9,1) 1 Moir’s Stormavon Sky Flyer to Jansanleis. What a picture! Stunning and beautifully presented correct white coat showing off this well balanced and well boned lady. Gorgeous head, excellent pigmentation and correct mouth. Neat catlike feet and high set tail. Just a little erratic in movement yet, but still Best Puppy. 2 Penwarne’s Sheldaman Spell on Voo. Well balanced black with lovely, almost square outline. Very good head with small ears and a good mouth. Enough bone and body at this stage. Well set tail, correct coat on the way. Good front but unsteady rear going away. 3 Corr’s Sheldamar Clair de Loon at Crystalclear.

JB
(8,4) 1 Metcalfe’s Flactem Night Spot. Cream sable with good quality and profuse coat on almost square and well boned body. Wedge head, neat ears and dark eye. A little unsettled on the move and rather lacking in drive. 2 Avent’s Runfold Summer Pudding. Over-sized but the best mover in the class, going and coming. Rather strong, wedge head but nice eye and correct mouth. Well ribbed but rather long in body. Coat just coming. 3 Holmes’ Precious Sapphire.

PGB
(11,5) 1 Storm’s Stormavon Scotch Mist. First class alert cream in excellent and correctly textured double coat. Almost square body with well proportioned wedge head, small neat ears and dark eye, correct mouth. Well ribbed, correct length of upperarm, straight front legs. Moved extremely well with purpose each way. Res CC. 2 Gittoe’s Molead Magic Queen. Well presented brown, just not in her best coat on the day bvut nevertheless a very sound lady with adequate bone and body. Good tailset, neat feet and level topline. Fairly strong head with correct eye shape and mouth. Moved straight coming and going. 3 Asher’s Wychlea Lady Sapphire.

LB
(6,3) 1 Bradbury’s Wychlea Marnie Brown. Well balanced brown with rather strong, wedge shaped head of good proportions. Well set slightly large ears, good eye and correct mouth. High set tail on well boned body, level topline and harsh coat. Moved brisky and with purpose, fractionally close moving away. 2 Allison’s Oberitz Astrobee. Black in good coat but slightly longer and not quite as well balanced as the winner. Nice bone and substance, good head, earset, eye shape and mouth. Lacked a little drive on the move but straight both ways. 3 Cook’s Goldritz Sleepflower.

OB
(4) 1 Wright and Storm’s Ch Oreion Absolutely Fabulous. What a well named lady and on the day she strutted her stuff. A very pretty white with a super coat, immaculately presented. Gorgeous head with excellent pigmentation, dark eyes, small neat ears and correct mouth. A lovely outline on a well balanced, well boned body. Level topline and high set tail, neat feet. So well put together, she moved well on the day both ways and was alert and on her toes. A well deserved CC and BOB. 2 Kimber and Brigden’s Ch Stonelight Electra. Another very attractive lady carrying a super black coat and so well put dowen. Good outline, very good wedge head with correct eye and ear placement, although I preferred the ear size of the winner. Movement was brisk but with a tendency to toe in a little. Well boned and alert. 3 Temple’s Rimazet Zephyr.
