Critique
Many thanks to the German Spitz Club of Great Britain for inviting me to judge at your 25th Anniversary Show. I approached the day with some trepidation having judged the Mittels at Crufts this year and finding very few who fitted my interpretation of the breed standard. However I need not have worried. There was a real depth of quality especially in some of the very young exhibits. This is an excellent state to be in and stands the breed in very good position for the future. This was reflected in the Dog CC winner and Reserve Bitch CC both being puppies. Previously I had found the blacks to dominate the winners. This was not the case today with the creams & parti-colours really shining through. Presentation was generally very good. However there was a minority which didn't feel as if they had even had a brush through their coat let alone been bathed. The cuffs and lower arms of my new jacket were absolutely filthy where it had brushed against the dog's coats. Also some of the exhibits lacked ringtraining, you would have thought some were just attending their first training class. As far as I'm concerned if you can't be bothered to present your dog to me to a reasonable standard and trained to an acceptable level for the ring then don't bother wasting your money entering. I am not including young puppies or dogs who have lost their coats in with those comments.
VD 1 Highmoor's Champion Kartmel Legolas, a 9 year old black of excellent quality who I have previously given top honours to, good outline, good head proportions excellent teeth, moved very well. Best Klein Veteran & Best Veteran In Show, very well deserved. 2 Trendle's Lusam Charlie Dobby, an amazing 11 year old cream in excellent coat and condition, good bone but just preferred the muzzle length of my winner. 3 Furber's Champion & Irish Champion Wizaland Dr Papalou At Holbain.
MPD 1 Halligan's Nardik New Moon, lovely 7 month old cream puppy, excellent coat with just enough bone for his size, moved well and had neat cat like feet, one for the future. 2 Beck's Nardik Tiger Woods, see is litter brother to the winner, black of larger size, good bone and head properties but needs to settle on the move. 3 Holmes Bucks Fizz.
PD Having just judged a very nice minor puppy class I couldn't believe the quality that came into the ring in this class. 1 Morgan's Cyfelin Jack Frost At Ahlenagen. 10 month masked cream, in tip top coat and condition and groomed and shown to perfection, excellent head properties,
excellent eye colour and shape, neat well placed ears, neat cat like feet, moved steadily. Dog CC, Best Klein Puppy, Best Puppy In Show, can see he won't be long gaining his title, good luck. 2 Highmoor's Printzagems Verve, just 10 days short of his 1st birthday, a black of obvious quality unfortunately not in the coat of the winner so had to pay the price this time, excellent head proportions, good dark eyes, another one with neat catlike feet, moved well. Reserve Best Klein Dog Puppy. 3 Beck's Nardik Tiger Woods.
JD A very difficult class to judge as every dog was out of coat so I could only evaluate them on their construction and leave the finished article for a future time? 1 Cook's Goldritz Stole The Sun, clear winner, nice 17 month old cream, would have liked a slightly longer muzzle, had
a good tailset and moved briskly. 2 Holmes & Leadbetter's Pommary's Thomas, a very much out of coat cream whose front movement let him down. 3 Avent's Paulgeo Devon Black Diamond.
PGD A very mixed class for size and type. 1 Norkett's Applebanks Thruppence, smart cream, balanced head with well placed ears, very neat feet, moved briskly, good square outline. 2 Wright & Kemp's Orion And Your Point Is, smart black, smaller in size, very good bone, coat and condition, excellent head proportions, just preferred the outline of the winner. 3 Hourd's Stonelight Rafferty's Rules.
LD 1 Hayward's Holbain Cool Fool, lovely brown parti-colour, just the right amount of bone, presented and shown to perfection, a strong contender for the top honours. 2 Allison's Oberitz Sunshine, ' a very nice shaded gold, again excellent type but lost out to the winner on his front movement. 3 Halligan's Icabel Shine On.
OD 1 Metcalfe's Flactem Domino, a well boned black and white parti-colour in excellent coat and condition, I had him down as my CC winner
when judged him in this class however he totally messed about in the challenge and just wouldn't stand still so he had to pay the penalty and be content with the RESERVE C.C. 2 Bradbury's Wychlea Rhonday Vooh, ' another quality dog standing but a bit erratic on the move and not in the coat of my winner but a very nice dog. 3 Hill & Gilraine's Champion Cyfelin Rudna Romeo.
VB 1 Furber's Champion Holbain Heven Sent, a very pretty black & white particolour who wasn't overly keen on the proceedings but a lovely type excellent type, good tailset, moved soundly. 2 Hughes & Forrester's Lusam Lucy In The Sky Over Candease, wolf sable, another good type, didn't have the coat of the winner but a lovely sound bitch. 3 Wright's Chilite Midnight Magic.
MPB 1 Norkett's Applebanks Florentine, sired by my postgraduate dog winner, a very pretty 6 month old cream, very feminine, moved briskly and easily, excellent coat for her age a very good prospect. 2 Bradbury's Stonelight Smoke N Mirrors By Wychlea, another very nice puppy well proportioned but not the coat of the winner or so positive on the move but she is still very young. 3 Hill's Paulgeo Dark Eyed Beauty At Dreamspinner.
PB 1 Francis & Pearce's Longdales Jen You Win, a very glamorous 9 month old pale cream, shown and presented to perfection, tip top coat and condition, excellent outline, excellent tailset, pushed the CC winner very hard, excellent prospect I'm sure she will make up easily Res CC, Best Bitch Puppy. 2 Chamber's Printzagems Viva La Diva For Musique, litter sister to my second in dog puppy class and the same remarks apply. At nearly 12 months old I'm surprised she was still holding that amount of coat, just unfortunate to meet such a lovely puppy on such top form, I'm sure her time will come? Like her litter brother she was RESERVE BEST BITCH PUPPY. 3 Hill's Cyfelin Rudna Juliet.
JB Like the junior dog class, this was a difficult class to judge as they were all very much out of coat. 1 Garwood's Printzagems Vista, litter sister to the second in puppy dog & puppy bitch but much further on with losing her coat, she was hiding nothing so I could see her good outline but she needs to settle more into showing. 2 Avery's Aveka Carbon Copy, thought she was my winner when she first came into the ring but messed about and wouldn't keep her tail up, nice shape but her tailset is a bit low. 3 Roberts Oberitz Nutmeg.
PGB 1 Tullis' Radajasa Agent Bett Sherfiz, a stunning well balanced pale cream, excellent bone for her size, lovely head pattern, unfortunately she decided she was only going to move a short distance and then come to an abrupt stop, it didn't matter which was we tried she just kept doing it. So when it came to the top honours I unfortunately had to discount her, however I did see enough to allow her to win this class 2 Delve's Claran Pavlova, another very nice cream who didn't quite have the balance or bone of my winner. Two very nice bitches. 3 Kemp's Stormavon Snowdrop With Yanlan.
LB 1 Francis & Pearce's Radajasa Agent Cher Bert Fiz Of Longsdale, yet another nice cream who I see is the litter sister to my postgraduate winner, she was in excellent coat and condition, good head properties, to be critical I would like her ears a little closer together and her eyes a little less round otherwise very nice. 2 Morgen's Edburton Charmer, pale gold of excellent shape, well shaped feet but a little disinterested in what was going on so had to pay the penalty to the bitch on such top form. 3 Garwood's Printzagems Tantalize.
OB 1 Francis & Pearce's Champion Rimazet Serafino Of Longsdale JW, stunning chocolate bitch, excellent outline, excellent coat and condition, lovely head proportion, correct size well placed ears, moved very well and in harmony with her handler. Everything about her was just right with nothing overdone, my interpretation of the breed standard, Bitch CC. Best Klein & Reserve Best In Show on the Referee's decision, I felt she had much better breed type than the Best Mittel. 2 Duncan's Irish Champion Tymy Tapestry Junior Champion, dark golden sable, another very nice bitch, not quite the movement of the winner but did consider her for the Reserve C.C. 3 Dyer's Wychlea The Dutchess Sh.CM.
KENNEL CLUB BREEDER'S COMPETITION BEST BREEDER IN BREED 1 Highmoors, although at various stages of coat they all still showed very good breed type, all were of similar size and looked like they belonged together. 2 Trendle.
