Critique
GERMAN SPITZ
MITTEL:I would first of all like to explain that I was more than happy to measure all of the dogs that were presented to me, however Crufts did not supply a measure for me to use and would not allow me to use the one which I was offered unless it had a test certificate confirming it was the height it was purporting to be. My overall opinion of the breed was that it has settled down quite a lot in head proportions in that there weren’t too many with long muzzles, however I found the general appearance very disappointing in that very few conformed to the ‘compact, short-coupled and well knit with an almost square outline’. Mouths had improved but there were still a few with misplaced bottom teeth. Temperament, without exception was excellent as was tailset and tail carriage. Many of the exhibits, particularly the bitches, were out of coat. Very few presented the full picture that I was looking for.
VD 1 Heslop’s Nixtev Fyreblade. 7 year old black dog, nicely balanced, good tailset, correct erect ears. 2 Connor’s Champion Galvizach Limited Edition. 8 year old shaded gold just preferred the neck length of my winner.
SpPD 1 Hill’s Wyndlee Sweet Talking Guy. 12 month old parti-colour, very attractive well balanced, nice amount of bone, excellent tailset, presented a good picture for his age. 2 Andrew’s Claran Narada. 11 month old black in very good coat and condition, excellent head, good head, moved well just a shade longer cast than my winner so did not present the overall picture I was looking for. 3 Beard’s Flamuna Franz Ferdinand. 11 months old, shorter coupled than 2 but was not so good in bone or coat, movement a bit erratic.
SpJD 1 William’s Druitz Black Prince. RCC. A clear winner, this dog took my eye as soon as he came into the class, he was just what I was looking for, excellent balance, in tiptop condition, presented the complete picture, moved well in his class but totally messed about in the challenge and had to settle for the reserve. He should have a very good future, I wish him well. 2 Mcculloch’s Spawood Dancemaster At Macpaws. A larger sized gold dog, still well balanced, good head properties, well balanced. 3 Drechsler’s Wyndlee Blowin In The Wind At Jeansway. Medium sized black, not as well balanced as the other two would just prefer a little more neck.
PGD 1 Smith’s Wyndlee Ghostly Magic. Nice sized cream dog, good bone, presented a well balanced picture overall with sufficient neck length. 2 Winser’s Nixtev Notorious Of Lysebourne. Smaller black, loved his head, eyes, ears and neck length, presented a lovely picture standing but his erratic movement cost him a higher place. 3 Alfred’s Liubice Just William. A larger pale cream, good pigment for such a pale coloured dog, when standing he looked very nice, could do with a bit more ring training as he was all over the place on the move.
LD 1 Nixtev Kinetic Under Fouranfass. Smart black on the smaller side, well balanced, n ice square outline lovely head proportions, erect ears which he used. 2 Mulholland’s Zephon Spookz The Tempest. Larger gold, not quite such a good outline as the winner, good bone, moved very well, good coat. 3 Purves Bulabs Polarbear. A nice sized cream who didn’t make the most of himself, nicely proportioned and moved well when he was not pulling on the lead.
OD 1 Andrew’s Claran Shades Of Fontleroy. CC & BOB. A close decision between the first two and originally had them standing the other way around but when I saw them together I just felt this dog conformed more with the breed standard general appearance. I also preferred the front on my winner. I would have preferred a darker eye but was aware that they can be compatible with the coat colour. A smart dog, surprised he isn’t a champion, his handler got the best out of him. 2 Chamber’s Champion Druitz Corncracker For Teamspitz JW ShCM. A very attractive dog who I originally thought would be my class winner, when viewing them side by side I preferred the shorter coupling of the other dog and he was moving a little wide in the front. 3 Hewett’s Spellcast Secrets And Lies JW. Another nice dog again a bit longer cast than my winner, nice amount of bone and good coat.
Good Citizen D 1 Blight’s Rosechow Ehrik’s. A black and tan unplaced in the open class, nice size, good coat but a seemed a little bit over awed by the whole thing. 2 King’s Grizwold Iolo Goch. Larger longer cast dog, good head, moved ok. 3 Bray’s Abbicher Move It. Young handler who needs ring practise, dog totally out of coat so nothing to hide.
VB 1 Sanderson’s Champion Galvizach Fredrika Via Danak. Attractive chocolate bitch, excellent coat and colour, 7 years old, nicely proportioned, moved briskly. 2 Garbutt’s Champion Runfold China Crisis At Nixtev. A cream bitch of 10 years old although you wouldn’t have known it to see her move, just lost out due to being longer cast than my winner. 3 Pooley’s Wyndlee Fallen Angel From Azkaban. A 9 year old gold bitch who was much longer and bigger all over than the other two in this class.
SpPB 1 Hewett’s Wyndlee Sweeter Than Wine. BP. A pretty very naughty, 13 month old black and white parti-colour, litter sister to my special puppy dog winner, although not in full coat she shows a lot of promise. 2 Heslop’s Flamuna Babyshambles. Brown, nice type, much calmer temperament than my winner but preferred the outline of my winner feeling it conformed more with the breed standard. 3 Cleworth’s Studholme Queen To Be. Wolf sable, totally out of coat, nice shape but a little more bone would complete the picture.
SpJB 1 Clarke’s Runfold Mystic Meg. Pretty feminine 17 month old, nicely balanced moved steadily, excellent eye shape with good eye colouring, well placed ears which she used. 2 Hewett’s Wyndlee Sweeter Than Wine. 3 McCulloch’s Wyndlee Maggies Farm At Macpaws. Nice black, very good bone, good tail carriage, needs to steady on the move.
PGB A mixed class for type. 1 Beard’s Spawood No Holds Barred. Nice gold bitch, lovely head eye and expression, in good coat with excellent tailset. 2 Clayton’s Studholme Diamond Fire. Black who was erratic on the move so difficult to assess, having said that she was very feminine with a good black coat. 3 Mountain’s Darayydala Pink Fizz At Hocombewood. Full coated light chocolate bitch, nice type but she threw her front around and high stepped.
LB 1 Orchard’s Spilmah Affair To Say. CC. Not my obvious winner at the beginning of judging this class. For a start she wasn’t in full coat but what coat she had was new, good texture and very attractive colour, unfortunately not sufficient to take her into the big ring. She was moved very confidently by her young handler and they were very much at one with each other. The more I watched her the more I liked her overall balance. I don’t know whether she already has any CC’s but either way I wish them both all the best for the future. 2 Moir’s Nixtev Liberty At Jannsanleis. A nice cream bitch with good dark eye and pigment, well balanced and well handled. 3 Purves Bulabs Griselda. Another cream bitch who wasn’t in full coat and could do with bodying up a bit more although could well happen as she grows her coat back, however she is a sound mover.
OB 1 Chambers Champion Nosregor Bewitched Of Musique. RCC. An attractive full coated chocolate bitch at the smaller end of the scale with just enough bone for her size, very good body and head proportions and erect ears which she used well. 2 Beard’s Champion Danacks Winnies The Witch. Another full coated chocolate bitch of excellent type but was tending to turn out one of her front feet. 3 Orchards Champion Pennypot Enchantress With Spilmah. My notes say very much out of coat, nothing to hide so you can see her excellent balance, unfortunate to have lost her coat at the wrong time otherwise I can visualise she would be very nice.
Good Citizen B 1 Pooley’s Wyndlee Fallen Angel From Azkaban. 2 King’s Grizwold Inabikari. Wolf sable who was rather fine boned and moved close behind, however she had good head properties and a good tailset.
