Critique

Several months ago,  I had the great honour of being asked to judge in the place of Ellis Hulme, who  had originally been elected to judge this show, but due to health concerns,  retired from judging. I know you will all want to join me in wishing him well  in the coming months, and hope that at some point we will see him back watching  the many breeds he has taken an interest in over the years. Although I have  judged over the years the two breeds at different club Ch. Shows, I have not  attended one recently, so the majority of the dogs were new to me. At the  Sports Connexion venue, a total of three different shows were being held all on  the same day, and the all- breed society quite wisely put on GS classes early  enough in the morning to allow exhibitors 'two bites of the cherry' as it were,  under two different judges. Due to traffic hold ups on the M6, the committee  held up the start of judging for 30 minutes, allowing some exhibitors to arrive  in time for their classes. Mr Keith Nathan judged the Kleins and I am pleased  to say that we were in full agreement with our final BIS/ RBIS/BPIS/BVIS  awards. Now, on to the Mittels, that had an excellent entry of 77. As this was  most likely the highest entry of the year, I feel I can go into greater depth  than I might otherwise do in a show report, as the entry should be most  representative of what is currently being shown.  I am going to try and focus as much as possible on the positive  attributes I found in my entry, but I do see some trends, and not all for the  good of the breed, and let's face it, that is what we ALL should be looking  for, the good of the breed and its development. The younger classes quite  frankly, I found depressing, lacking in breed type, heads/expression, poor  conformation and even worse movement. If I were a breeder today of GSM I would  be extremely worried, if this is what is being presented to the public as 'show  quality'. In my opinion, and that is all it is, my own opinion,85far too many  being shown are what I would call 'pet quality'. Nothing wrong with pet  quality, as I consider the dogs I live with first and foremost my pets, but I  sincerely hope that a lot of what I saw on the day will not be bred from, as  the breed will only deteriorate further.   Now as to the good, the open and veteran classes were extremely good,  and in open dog I would have been quite happy to award the CC to any of the  first three on the day85what a laugh, then to find later on, in looking at the  catalogue, that the first three are already champions, so I guess they didn't  need me to tell them that! I found temperaments by and large quite good with  only one apprehensive exhibit which as time went on, settled quite well. All  the exhibitors were in good spirits and showed very good sportsmanship  throughout the entire show, a feature that is not often found in shows these  days. My thanks to my steward and the committee, who were extremely helpful in  relocating my examination and judging tables to escape the nearby exit door  banging away every time it was used.  I  was looking for substance (the coat not disguising lack of it), good overall  conformation, strong pasterns, good tight feet, well ribbed back with short  loin, the elbows coming directly under the withers, meaning enough length of  upper arm to allow for this to happen, and of course the texture of coat which  must be straight and off-standing. Heads for Mittels should not resemble a  Klein's head, nor the bone either of a GSK in the legs or body. Ear sets and  size varied quite a lot as did eye shape, but the overwhelming problem at least  with my entry had to be poor front movement, and this I feel, is due to the too  far forward placement of the shoulder and upper arm. It would seem that in  looking after the show at the results in the catalogue, that certain kennels  tended to feature quite prominently in my selections, so now you know why, and  perhaps others will consider what they can do to improve their future  generations!

VD (4, 1): 1 Hewett's Ch Runfold Full Throttle with  Spellcast, JW. Quality dog, 9 yrs old, attractive outline, square in body with  good overall conformation, particularly in forehand; mouth is showing age,  moves true in all directions, but would like a bit brisker pace. 2 Thurston's  Rossfort Caractacus From Liubice. Lovely headed cream dog with good forehand  but front and back angles don't match and this shows on the move. Overall, very  typical outline, good  body and coat  texture; preferred his expression over the class winner, but preferred movement  of class winner.  3 Clayton's Studholme  Frizzco Kid.

MPD (3) 1 Frances & Pearce's Studholme Rolls Of Thunder  At Longsdale. Stood out in a poor class. Cream dog of quality and substance,  just 6 months old, just needs to grow on a bit in front to level out topline,  but this will come as the knuckling shows there is more growth to front legs.  Lovely head and expression, excellent bone, pasterns and feet, very good coat  and tail set, moves well, most promising. Best PD. 2 Roskell's Sandkarahs  Absalom. Active and alert outgoing temperament, excellent dark eyes, not the  head, construction, tail set or body shape of class winner. 3 Hamer's Wyndlee  Silver Lightning Of Clarmer.

PD (3): 1,Wilson's Nickila Silver  Sovereign, only one in this class that for me has a correct head and  expression. Almost 12 months,  so  lacking right now in body and coat. Good tail set, neat feet, has good rear and  side gait; 2,Williams' Druitz The Student Prince, well set ears, prefer head  and expression of class winner. This youngster also is in junior stage so  lacking body and coat right now, but the texture is excellent; 3 Hughes &  Forrester's Druitz Welsh Wizard At Candease.

JD (4, 1) 1 Jones' Flamuna  Revelations At Runestone. 12 month sable dog with very good body, head, neck  and excellent coat and tail set. Good legs and feet. Best gait in the class,  gives alert and square outline, very typey. 2 Garbutt's Nixtev Polarize.  Beautiful cream dog who just threw it away. I loved him for breed type, head  and expression, beautiful to go over for correct conformation, but would just  not move correctly, so had to pay the price. Another day, and he will go to the  top, given time, I love this dog! 3 N. S. Sovereign.

PGD (4) Quite a  variation in size, but all within the standard. Good movement was not a strong  point in this class. 1 Clayton's Rossfort Gerhardt At Studholme. Excellent  example of the breed for type, this cream having  beautiful construction, substance, coat, excellent bone, legs,  feet, almost square outline, excellent forehand, although he persists in  standing wide. His head is excellent for expression. 2 Alfred's Rossfort My Imp  At Teamor. Just within the bottom of the standard, so he is correct, but this  parti coloured dog has for me more a Klein type of head, so I found the muzzle  to be a shade short. Otherwise, he is very good to go over, having an  attractive outline of almost square in proportions and balance. I preferred the  ear set of class winner and coat texture. 3 Heslop's Flamuna Franz Ferdinand.

LD (8, 2) Another class with great variation in movement and also head pattern. 1  Rogerson & Quayle's Nosregor Kateandy Cregg-Na Bay. Two and a half year old  chocolate dog with an attractive square outline, and well trained to show off  his positive virtues, being so alert and showy. Good head and expression,  excellent coat texture, very good tail set, OK side and front gait. Is not as  well ribbed back as I would prefer. 2 Pooley's Wyndlee Short N'Sweet At  Azkaben. Almost 3 yr old black with white feet and trim, this dog is one you  might initially not consider, but in going over him, you come to appreciate his  many good virtues. He is very good to go over conformation wise, Head is fairly  typical with broad skull, but I would like a shade more length of muzzle. Eyes  are dark, his lovely small ears are well set, on the move shows excellent rear  gait, lovely to see! 3 Alfred's Liubice Just William.

OD (10, 1) Best  class of the day so far, thank you for bringing along such quality dogs. 1  Johanneson's Sw/Dan/Finn Ch Rossfort Rising Sun. Excellent cream dog for breed  type coupled with correct conformation. Has excellent forehand with elbows  under the withers, not too wide in front, he has an exemplary body shape, being  well ribbed back and short strong loin, excellent tail set on and correct coat.  Beautiful front and side gait, would like just a tad more impulse from the rear  and that was the deciding factor for both Mr Nathan and me when it came to  declaring the very top award. Dog CC/BOB and Reserve BIS. 2 Hewett's Ch  Spellcast Talk To Me JW. A black dog not unknown to me, as I awarded him a CC  when he was much younger. Excells again for breed type and outline, correct  forehand, not quite the substance of class winner, but lovely overall, very  good front and side gait as well, shown in tip top condition; has excellent  coat texture. RCC and Res BOB. 3 Hewett's Ch Spellcast Secret And Lies JW.

VB (5) 1 Sanderson's Ch Galvizach Fredricka Via Danack. Nine and a half year old  dark chocolate bitch. I know that any colour and markings are acceptable, but I  find this particular shade of chocolate to be quite aesthetically pleasing, to  my eye, at least. I also remember this bitch, awarding her the all-important  third CC five years ago, and she still fills my eye for breed type. Presents  excellent outline and overall balance, alert and well schooled, but is still  buoyant in her outlook and temperament, which I found  missing in many of the younger dogs and bitches today. VG body,  excellent coat, head and expression, brisk gait. Best Veteran and with the  agreement of Mr Nathan, the Klein judge, Best Veteran in Show. 2 Clayton's  Studholme Kiss An Tell, 9 yr old cream bitch of smaller mould, having excellent  head and expression, dark eyes, ears are a shade tall. Very good conformation,  body, coat and tail. Excellent quality, but I would just like a tad more leg  length to square her up more. 2 King's Grizwold Inabikari.

MPB (5, 1) 1  Moir's Jansanleis Mayhem. Wow what a start to this little star's show career,  she is the one I would take home in a moment, and she can only go on to better  things. Delightfully feminine and outgoing cream bitch of six and a half  months, excellent head and expression, very good to go over for conformation  and already has excellent coat, bone and substance, strong pasterns, neat feet,  good spring of rib, moves so true and well with light quick action. Love her  front and side gait! Most promising. Best PB, BPIB and with the agreement of my  co-judge, BPIS. 2 Beech's Sandkarah Tweedleedee, eight and a half month sable  bitch, not the proportions or balance of class winner, but has attractive,  feminine expression, good overall conformation, good coat, very good side gait,  not as  compact in loin as class winner.  3 Hamer's Wyndlee Thunder Cloud of Clarmer.

PB (4, 1) This class was not  as good as previous one, movement suffered in comparison. 1 Williams' Druitz  Follow That Dream. 11 month old chocolate, presents a good overall picture,  typical head and body, excellent coat texture and tail. Movement extremely  uneven, due to mismatch of front and rear angles. 2 Hughes & Forrester's  Druitz Dusky Dream At Candease. 11 month old sable not too confident on the  table, but has good overall body shape. Typical head and expression, very good  neck and forehand, along with excellent coat texture and tail set. On the floor  gained much more confidence and showed excellent rear and side gait. Give her  time and she can only improve. 3 Punton's Nickila Dazzling Diamante.

JB (6, 2) 1 Garbutt's Nixtev Passion, beautiful cream bitch having excellent breed  type, lovely head and expression, correct conformation, excellent body, bone  and substance, lovely coat and tail, moved very well, but front feet are not  her fortune. 2 McLaren's Ichmoran Primrose Polka. Just a shade over 12 months,  this brown and white parti bitch is very good to go over on the table, but at  this time has yet to learn the routines or procedures of the show ring to best  effect! Has alert expression, typical outline, very good body and substance,  preferred movement of class winner. 3 Blight's Flamuna Curtain Call For  Rosechow.

PGB (9, 3) Good class, but a number of wide fronts; movement  let some down as well. 1 Richardson's Wyndlee Lawdy Miss Clawdy At Jomihvar.  Almost 2 years old dark gold girl very nice to go over with moderate yet  balanced angles at both ends. Excellent body shape, well ribbed back with short  loin. Alert, feminine expression, ears a shade wide set. Very good coat. 2  King's Druitz Cariad Bach Of Grizwold. 2 year orange bitch, very good to go  over having excellent conformation and gait, but is not as compact as desired,  this affecting topline; also lacks the spring of rib. Very good coat texture.  Nice to see a loose lead and the bitch showing many positive attributes off by  herself! 3 Alfred's Rossfort Black Girl At Teamor.

LB (9, 5) Two excellent  creams in this class, little to separate. 1 Orr's Rossfort Andante With  Sobriety. 20 month old bitch presenting excellent outline, and topping it all  off with a truly lovely head and typical expression. She has excellent body  development, being well ribbed back with short loin. Interestingly enough,  rather open angled in the forehand, but I didn't see that standing on the floor  or on the move at all, having correct gait in all directions. Lovely feet,  bone, strong pasterns and correct coat, pressed for top awards, her day will  come. 2 Thurston's Caoilta Iceni For Liubice. Close up cream also having  excellent outline and breed type. She has a better forehand than class winner,  but I preferred the eye shape, strength of front pasterns and foot shape of  number one. Excellent body, coat, moves quite well, very typical otherwise 3  McLaren's Daraydala Hocomewood Black Diamond.

OB (5, 1) The first two are close  up in quality, both excellent examples, front gait was the deciding factor here  in the class. 1 Purves' Ch Rossfort Griselda. Excellent cream bitch, oozes  breed type and quality coupled with textbook forehand, and as a result, excellent  neck for set on, correct topline, excellent coat for texture and correct tail  set. Her movement is a joy to watch, so true, effortless, yet covering the  ground with no apparent exertion and still being brisk. Is just a tad long in  loin, but otherwise an excellent bitch. Bitch CC. 2 Heslop's Runfold Joo Joo  Bee Doo By Flamuna. Big girl, this black, but within the standard. Has  substance to match her size, and as one would expect, also the very good  conformation as well, excellent to go over. Excellent coat, her front movement  let her down in the final analysis and I found her head a bit masculine for me,  but otherwise a quality bitch. 3 McCulloch's Ir Ch Whyndlee Maggies Farm At  McPaws.

Brace 1 Heslop's well matched pair of blacks, similar heads/  expressions, size, shape and looked good going around the ring. 2 Thurston's  pair of creams fairly well matched with similar heads, not quite the same  proficiency going together around the ring and slight differences in size and  shape. 3 Garbutt's pair.

Breeder's Group 1 Williams team of four.
