When thinking about purchasing a puppy;
Human Presence & Absence
Any regular daily human absence? If so for how long? Max time left alone? Where will it be when left alone? If a puppy will it have a play-pen? Arrangements for holidays etc.?
when thinking of buying a puppy a few things to think about below
Outside of property
Protection from getting out onto the road?
Area for dog - size and security?
Fences & gates secure? If there is a swimming pool is it totally secure? Any barbed wire, broken glass etc?
Security of dustbins? Any problem dogs in neighbourhood?
Any neighbours difficult about barking? Take collar off dog when not on road (e.g. if liable to go down a rabbit hole)
Inside the house
Is the dog going to have a secure and loving home? Do you appreciate how much they moult?
Where will the dog live, sleep and feed? Would a Spitz put objects or light coloured furniture at risk?
How secure for the dog to not escape?
How many children, dogs, other animals? Do you appreciate the risk of hanging? Always remove collar in house
Other pets
Current & previous dogs - number, breed, health & lifespan? Are they apparently friendly and happy? Socialized? Correct weight? Groomed and comfortable? State of nails – evidence of walks or at least clipped? Remember aquaria and reptiles!
Training
Ringcraft planned? Showing? Dog Training planned – e.g. Fido classes? Speying /neutering planned? Breeding planned?
*********************************
When you decide a puppy is for you ask plenty of questions a reputable breeder will not mind and would prefer you do, ask if you can ring them for any advice, most breeders also like follow ups of how the puppy is doing
Check if both parents have had the relevant health tests
Always see your puppy with it's mother it may not be possible to see the father as the breeder may not own him, then enjoy your lovely bundle of fun
